His choice proves to be the correct one, as Spiers manages to extract Easy Company from disaster and lead them toward victory. But when Dike panics in the middle of the assault, causing the needless deaths of many men, Winters finally has an excuse to get rid of him and replaces him with Ronald Spiers. But Winters can do nothing without any cause, due to Dike’s connections. Lipton tries to warn battalion XO Winters that Dike might prove to be a disaster for Easy Company’s assault upon Foy. Before he could reach Warren “Skip” Muck and Alex Penkala’s foxhole, a German shell completely obliterated it. Poor Luz finds himself crawling through the forest, searching for a foxhole for refuge. Easy Company has a short respite before another round of shelling by the Germans.
